Overcoming Great Barriers!

Meet Mark Buggy, our very own Patient Care Assistant, and find out how he overcame great barriers to achieve improved psychological health. Check out this video to hear from Mark about how his struggles began.

"We all need help at sometime in our lives." I find myself saying this to patients on occasions when they are embarrassed, or apologizing to me when I am helping them with their Activities of Daily living.

If I hadn't received the help that was given to me, I wouldn't be here today. Life caught up with me in a number of areas and I couldn't run from my problems any longer. Life presented me with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) which I used alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism, a divorce, and the deaths of several friends. It was a very difficult time, and I literally had a foot on the edge of a balcony ready to jump, until I had a flash of my boys in my mind.

I had accomplished several great things in life, but I realized I couldn't do it all on my own. Life became really tough from the build up of all these things over the years. I was humbled. I finally learned of the strenth that humility truly is. I also learned how to be vulnerable and get out all the things that had been haunting and harming me over the years. I took the advice of several professionals and did exactly what they told me to do instead of ignoring and trying to fix it all myself like I had done my whole life.

Running from my problems was easier than facing them, but once I faced them I felt hope again; I hadn't felt it in a long time. I felt the tremendous release of all the shame, guilt, anger, and self-pity I had built up over the years. It's not an overnight success or process, but I have learned how to manage things and run toward my problems now instead of avoiding them.

It takes time, patience, and love with ourselves to get through the difficult events in our lives. But, I can assure you, it is so worth the effort. After a while, the work becomes a natural part of our day. Some days are easier, and some days are harder than others, but self-care is always needed. Self-care enables me to face life, no matter what is happening. That makes my experiences very rewarding.

No matter what is going on in our lives, there is help out there for us. I have seen several other people turn their lives around as well. I changed my life with the help of Social workers, Psychologist, Psychiatrists, my family Doctor, family and friends, and an amazing community that waits for us to ask for help, only too happy to join us in our journey.

Everyone goes through difficult times in life. We all need help at some point. Don't go through it alone. There is help available, and the help works, if you put the work into it. Life can be manageable and happy again.

I am looking forward to helping staff here as I soon become a Peer Partner under KGH's Peer Partner Support Program.
